John C.C. Mayo came to Paintsville as a teacher but soon became aware of the region’s potential in coal. He began buying mineral rights, eventually becoming Ky’s wealthiest citizen. His mansion, built in 1905-1912, is three stories tall with 43 rooms. Today, the mansion serves as Our Lady of the Mountains parochial school.
Free-roaming horses can be found within a few minutes drive of the Center’s property at the top of the mountain. Small and large herds, with mares, stallions, and youngsters roam the thousands of acres left by coal mining.
