Kentucky.
• It was strategically important as a potential Union invasion route into Southwest Virginia and as an
avenue for Confederate invasion into eastern Kentucky
• The mountain pass changed hands several times throughout the war
• A Union force under Colonel James A. Garfield defeated a Confederate garrison around Pound Gap on
March 16, 1862
